White & Mantell Family History

The ancestor's on my mother’s side – White

William James (Edward - Great Grandfather )

William was living in Goonellabah, Lismore where he married Anna Elizabeth Christina Leu in the Church of England, 14th August 1886 in Lismore. He is described as a Tailor on his death certificate.
William’s marriage certificate lists him as a widower. The only other possible marriage I can find that fits the dates and locality is to a Fanny Astbrey.
Documents in the Leu family history book and on William’s death certificate have him being born in Lancashire, England. Other details have his parent’s country listed as Wicklow, Ireland.

William and Anna had the following children

Anna married again to Joseph Brooks 17th May 1903 in Murwillumbah NSW and had 6 more children.
More can be read in the Leu family history book.

Richard Edward Mantell (Great Grandfather)

Richard's mother was previously marries to George Yates Mussared and had 1 child. Below is the story of that marriage.

MUSSARED William George son of George Yeates MUSSARED:

Born in the seaside village of Margate in Kent county England in 1854, reknown today for its reticent beaches overlooking the English Channel, William in his early years grew up without a father; dying at sea in the Mediterranean.
One time, William was sent to purchase butter with a plate, it was the time of a great fire in London. He had become so attracted by the fire that he returned home without the butter or plate.
His mother Sarah Eliza remarried Frederick Mantell, and at 10 years of age his new family moved to Australia aboard the "Red Rose" departing on the 1st of March 1864. During the voyage the "Red Rose" caught fire at sea. The crew managed to save the ship and its passengers after a hard time and reached Port Melbourne, Australia, on the 16th June 1864 a little damaged. It was later learnt that the same ship eventually was wrecked taking horses to Calcutta.
William was apprenticed to a meat preserving industry at Footscray, Melbourne, Vic.
William's mother died soon after arriving and at 17 years age his step-father, Frederick Mantell, too died, leaving him suddenly with two younger step-brothers and a step-sister to look after in Melbourne. (see 1871 census note). William had little choice but to give up the two youngest, Helen (being only 3 months when Sarah died) and Frederick leaving them in a Melbourne Orphanage, and cared for Richard Mantell. Richard eventually settled in the Lismore district of NSW and had quite a large family.
At age 22 William went to Tantawanglo near Bega,NSW, and married Miss Annie Eliza Grant 31 May 1877. Annie was the daughter of Captain Grant, brother of William's late mother Sarah Eliza Grant nee Mussared nee Mantell.
William followed dairying on the south coast at Brogo and Tantawanglo. He leased 3000 acres of the Kameruka estate from Sir Robert Tooth for 11 years. Sir Robert gave Annie a silver teapot.
Around 1907 William brought 45 head of his cattle to Tenterfield NSW by train and drove them overland to Casino with the idea of selecting land at Wooralwoolgan. On arriving back home to get his family he changed his mind, in the meantime the agent he paid to look after the herd sold his cattle, telegramming him to say they had died of Black leg. He found out later that his herd formed the nucleus of the first dairy herd in the Casino District.
In 1909 he purchased a farm the "Avonleigh" at Coramba from a Mr W. Perkins, "Inglewood" from Mr Lembko, and later purchased a farm at Nana Glen from Mr B. Sherwood known as the "Bona Vista." He lived on "Avonleigh" until his death, 8th May 1935. William was one of the first cheese makers in the Bega district, and set up a cheese factory at Coramba. He carted cheese weekly to Coff's Harbour by horse and sulky to be shipped to Sydney. The cheese sold under the brand name of "Apollo" and commanded a good price.

In Loving Memory of
WILLIAM GEORGE
MUSSARED
who died 8th July
1935
Aged 81 years

Dearest Father thou hast left us,
We thy loss most deeply feel,
But 'tis god who hath bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal,
Silent grave to thee we trust,
This precious part of Earthly dust,
Guard it safely sacred tomb,
Till we his children ask for room.

Census 1871: Somerset Cape York Queensland Australia, registered as a Boy Class 1 in the

royal navy aboard the vessel Rosario.
1930 Electoral Roll, Cowper, Glenreagh. Residence; 'Bona Vista' Nana Glen - Farmer

George Yeates Mussared (Will's dad)
George Yates Mussared was once the captain of the "Lady Josephine" hailed to be the largest mail boat of its time.
George Yates Mussared married Sarah Eliza Grant 25 December 1851. They had a son in William George, however, George, now a retired sea captain was asked to ferry a ship load of troops to the Crimea (Crimean War). Sarah and George's dream to sail to Australia was put on hold and 4 weeks before William was born George sailed with the troops in the ship the "Golden Fleece."
In due course of the war, George died and was buried at a port in the Mediterranean. Though his means of death is not known, there is a good chance that he may have been just one of the many thousands of men who died from Cholera, an epidemic that decimated as many soldiers in the Russian Crimea as bullets.
